Garlic also locally known as Kitunguu
saumu is versatile and used in products ranging from spicy cakes to drinks and
sweets .It is a valuable crop because of its healing properties .
Garlic is not planted from seed but
from individual garlic cloves .Each clove produces a single plant with a single
head of garlic .Each garlic head contains a cluster of garlic cloves .This is a
continuous process.
Planting process: Personally I have tried this process and it works, its different but it works. In this process we are going to use a small container where germination of the garlic cloves will take place. Inside the small basin or container, place several garlic cloves in an upright position, whereby the root of the clove is down and the shoot is up. The garlic cloves should have a lot of dry paper-like skin covering the cloves and heads.
Tip:
use the big cloves in this process.
Add little water every day in the basin/contain and leave it near
a window or outside near little sunrays. After a week, the shoot and the root
will have already grown.
In a large container or bucket ,the soil should be 6 inches deep. Using your finger or trowel ,poke a hole 2 inches deep and place each clove root down .cover the garlic clove with fine airy soil. After planting ,lightly water in the rows until the soil is slightly damp. Then place the container outside to create favorable conditions for growth.
NB:
Don’t over water the soil.
The key success of watering the garlic
is making sure that the soil drains well. If the cloves sit in cold ,wet soil ,it
will rot .watering is not necessary during rainy months .It also requires well
tilled and drained soil to allow sustainable growth.
