Busia County Government Launched a Fish Eatery

The Busia County Government has opened a fish restaurant in Samia Sub County.

The enterprise is funded by the Kenya Climate Smart Agriculture Project, and it’s the first of its kind in Nangina Ward. It was established with the goal of improving per capita fish consumption.

Busia Governor Sospeter Ojaamong stated in a speech delivered on his behalf by CEC Member for Agriculture Dr Moses Osia that this facility will improve the uptake of fish value addition technologies and innovations by the communities benefiting from the project.

Ojaamong also complimented KCSAP for helping the Wakhungu hatchery, which has a 1.5 million fingerling production capacity per year.

“KCSAP has also aided in the production of Nasewa fish feed by installing a pelletizer machine for the creation of high-quality floating pellets,” Ojaamong added.

Additionally, he complimented the University of Eldoret for developing and erecting 14-metre-diameter fish cages in the open waters of Lake Victoria in Bunyala Sub County.

“I also applaud the contribution made by the Kenya Marine and Fisheries Research Institute for establishing an online Aquaculture Market Information System and acquiring fish value addition and post-harvest technological equipment for beneficiary groups for greater income and improved livelihoods.”

Additionally, the governor stated that the project seeks to increase aquaculture production from 1,080 to 4,300 tons per year by the end of this year.

Francis Owino, Principal Secretary for the State Department of Fisheries, stated that it was necessary to localize fish culture technology in order to increase fish production.

Owino claimed in a speech given on his behalf by Regional Director Samson Kidera that fishpond technology converts wastelands into hotspots for fish production within floodplains.

He added that Kenya is Africa’s fourth largest farmed fish producer, with a capacity of 20,000 metric tons.
