Kenyans should drink more coffee to create a domestic market for the crop.
“We need to reform the Kenyan culture of taking more tea and yet we are looking for the markets for our coffee. It is thus important to increase local consumption of coffee by having it as a choice beverage so that we can create a local market for the produce to complement the international market,” said the Principal Secretary, State Department of Agricultural Research, Prof Hamadi Boga.
Though Kenya produces the best quality coffee worldwide, only two per cent is consumed locally. Most Kenyans, including coffee farmers, have always preferred tea over coffee. The country should emulate Ethiopia, which produces more coffee than Kenya and consumes about 50 per cent of it locally
